Behaviour can be an area where we expect so much and teach so little

(Galvin et al, 1999)

This website is to help Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs) to understand what behaviour for learning is and provide them with useful tips to use. Adams (2009) state that 97% of NQT’s in 2009 identified that pupil discipline was a fundamental challenge for them (Adams, 2009).

Tips/Advice

The meaning of Behaviour for learning can be misperceived with managing behaviour. Therefore, it is essential that you understand the difference between both.

Behaviour for learning has a strong emphasis about developing learning behaviours. Ellis and Tod (2009) believe that when it comes to behaviour it is not necessary about controlling behaviour but about teaching skills from social, emotional and behavioural (Ellis and Tod, 2009). In order to encourage these skills in the classroom you need develop the pupils’ positive relationship with themselves, others and the curriculum which are the basic foundations for behaviour for learning.

This site will explain that the when teaching, positive learning behaviours need to be clearly taught and strong explanations need to be distinct in the classroom.

This site will support you with your professional development as an NQT. You need to be confident when teaching learning behaviours and have an understanding on how to prevent negative behaviours that can have an impact on other pupils learning in your class. Research carried out by the DFE (2012) believe that disruptive behaviour by pupils may impact negatively on the classroom environment, and consequently lead to loss of valuable teaching time (DFE,2012).

It can be seen that behaviour for learning is important to decrease the amount of disruption in your classroom. This will have a positive impact on your pupils learning.

Also as an NQT you will need to follow and meet all of the teacher standards especially  Standard 7 ‘Manage behaviour effectively to ensure a good and safe learning environment’.

Furthermore, to meet this standard you need to promote the use of having high expectations, manage classes effectively, develop good relationships with pupils and encourage positive learning behaviours.

The reason why I have chosen to create my site on Behaviour for Learning, is that I have observed other teachers who are challenged with ongoing difficulties in the classroom due to behaviour. ‘The behaviour for leaning conceptual framework allows teachers to plan proactively to develop the necessary learning behaviours in individuals’ (Ellis et al, 2009:56). Thus, in regards to the framework NQT’s will be able to use this site to develop their understanding of behaviour for learning. You will be able to analyse examples of good practice. In order for you reflect upon your current practice which can have an impact on pupils learning experiences.
